26. Dear friends, if we deliberately continue sinning after we have received knowledge of the truth, there is no longer any sacrifice that will cover these sins.

27. There is only the terrible expectation of God’s judgment and the raging fire that will consume his enemies.

28. For anyone who refused to obey the law of Moses was put to death without mercy on the testimony of two or three witnesses.

29. Just think how much worse the punishment will be for those who have trampled on the Son of God, and have treated the blood of the covenant, which made us holy, as if it were common and unholy, and have insulted and disdained the Holy Spirit who brings God’s mercy to us.

30. For we know the one who said, “I will take revenge. I will pay them back.”

He also said, “The LORD will judge his own people.”

31. It is a terrible thing to fall into the hands of the living God.

Hebrews 10:26–31 NLT

In today’s passage, the author takes a very different tack. He has successfully demonstrated his point that Jesus has Become the Great High Priest and Through the Shedding of His Blood, He has done away with the Old Covenant and Made with us a New Covenant Through His Holy Spirit.

Now, however, we begin to see why this is all so vitally important, why he spent so much time illustrating his topic, and why he originally called this particular argument “the Strong Meat of the Word”.

After God has gone so far out of His way to actually Become one of His Own Creations, Shed His Own Blood, and Died for the sins of the world, after He has Paid such a High Price for our willful transgressions, and we have accepted His Sacrifice, what do you think the recompense will be if we continue to sin and reject His Love as if it never happened, or as if we simply don’t care if it did?

The author tells us that if that is the position we take, then we have broken the New Covenant, and the Promises of Grace and Forgiveness that comes with it no longer apply to us.

There is only one thing at that point that we have to look forward to and that is the Righteous and Wrathful Judgment of Almighty God. He didn’t do all this for His Health, He did it for our Redemption and if we cast His Love back in His Face there will literally be Hell to pay!

Look at the Old Covenant and the punishment for breaking the Law of Moses. All it took was 2 or 3 witnesses to bring charges against you and you would be stoned to death.

These days we often see God as some harmless old man in the sky that couldn’t care less about what goes on in the world, or as some toothless lion that has no bite but if that is how you see God you couldn’t be more wrong.

Imagine what you would do if you sacrificed your life for someone so that they could be rescued from the clutches of an evil captor and after they received their freedom, out of their own volition, they decided to willfully reenter their captivity, going right back to where you saved them from.

This, in essence, is what we are doing when we go back to our WILLFUL sin after receiving God’s Holy Spirit and His Forgiveness. When we go back to our same old lifestyle once Saved from it by His Grace, it’s like spitting in God’s Eye.

What do you think His Reaction to that would be? I’ll admit, this is a heavy thought, isn’t it? This is exactly why the author called this the Strong Meat of the Word. This kind of Doctrine is not meant for New Christians but for those that can handle chewing on a little tough gristle and more nourishing protein fiber for the express benefit of their souls.

Once we have accepted the Promises of the New Covenant

it is not a wise position for us to go back to our old sins and lifestyle. God is not a joke and His Sacrifice shouldn’t be taken lightly.

We have a serious decision to make when we Accept Jesus Christ as our Savior. We are essentially entering into a Contract with Almighty God and breaking it incurs punitive damages to our eternal souls. I think the author may have summed it up best when he said, “It is a terrible thing to fall into the hands of the living God.”
