DAILY WORD 7/6/20
8. The priests who collect tithes are men who die, so Melchizedek is greater than they are, because we are told that he lives on.
9. In addition, we might even say that these Levites — the ones who collect the tithe — paid a tithe to Melchizedek when their ancestor Abraham paid a tithe to him.
10. For although Levi wasn’t born yet, the seed from which he came was in Abraham’s body when Melchizedek collected the tithe from him.
Hebrews 7:8–10 NLT
Today’s passage is another thin slice of “Meat” delivered in small portions so that it may be savored, enjoyed, and understood even by those new to the “Strong Meat” of the Word.
The author is slowly and deliberately breaking down his “argument” for Melchizedek being a greater individual than Abraham and his Priesthood being superior to that of the Levitical Priesthood.
We’ll be focusing on this particular set of points for the next day or so and I plan to break it down deliberately so that none of the intricate points are lost to any of the others.
The author begins this passage by rehashing the subject of tithes, he also touches briefly on the longevity of Melchizedek’s Priesthood.
Though the Levitical priests, that being priests chosen from the line of Jacob’s 3rd son, Levi, the individuals who were solely tasked with the priest’s duty under the Mosaic Law, had as part of their purvey, gathering up the tithes, or tenth part of the goods of the Children of Israel.
The Tithe was an Offering to God required by the Law for use by the priests for the execution of the duties of the priesthood. The first tithe was paid by Abraham to King Melchizedek before the Law of Moses was ever instituted as an honor to him for his status with God.
The author is stating in Verse 10 that the Levites, in essence, paid tithe to Melchizedek by way of Abraham in that they were not yet born and he was their grandfather, so if he paid a tithe to Melchizedek, who he considered greater than himself, then by association, Melchizedek must be greater than the Levitical priests.
The author is setting up his next point that we will get to in another post but until then, consider that the Law is no longer in place for the followers of God. It was the Definitive Rule for all God’s followers for hundreds of years but it was contravened by Jesus as He came to Earth to Die for our sins.
There is a larger point being made here than just the differences between Abraham, the Levites, and Melchizedek but I apologize, in my excitement, I’m getting a little bit ahead of myself.
We will be covering Melchizedek for another day or two because his priesthood lives on through Jesus and arguably, the Levitical priesthood died with Him. Like I said, this is “Strong Meat”, we’re not dealing with “Milk” here anymore!
It takes a little longer to digest meat than it does milk but it also contains more complex and beneficial nutrients. That’s what we are dealing with here. Hold on for the ride because the “Meal” is gonna be good!
Have a Marvelous Monday and Stay Safe out there!
