1. This Melchizedek was king of the city of Salem and also a priest of God Most High. When Abraham was returning home after winning a great battle against the kings, Melchizedek met him and blessed him.

2. Then Abraham took a tenth of all he had captured in battle and gave it to Melchizedek. The name Melchizedek means “king of justice,” and king of Salem means “king of peace.”

3. There is no record of his father or mother or any of his ancestors — no beginning or end to his life. He remains a priest forever, resembling the Son of God.

Hebrews 7:1–3 NLT

Today’s passage begins Chapter 7 of the Book of Hebrews and offers us yet another heaping helping of “Strong Meat” to masticate! This Chapter goes into the similarities between Melchizedek, the first recorded High Priest of the Most High God, and Jesus, the Great High Priest.

The only mention of Melchizedek in the Old Testament is recorded in Genesis Chapter 14 which recounts the story of Abraham saving Lot from the War of the Kings which occurred around Soddom where Lot was living.

He, his family, and all his goods were captured as spoils of war and when Abraham found out, he and his servants went to rescue him. Upon his successful return, Abraham was met by Melchizedek the Priest who blessed him in the Name of the Lord.

Abraham gave him a tenth of the goods he took in his victory over his enemies hence the tradition of tithes we still practice today. But that is not the most significant thing we take from this passage.

The author equates Melchizedek with Jesus because he was greater than Abraham in that he blessed an individual that was considered to be the father of the Israelite nation. He was both a king and a priest just like Jesus is considered to be.

Where Melchizedek was just a man, Jesus is the Eternal King and Great High Priest. This passage is the entry to a greater understanding of Jesus’s Power which we will be studying in coming posts but until then, understand that Jesus is more than just a Man or a Priest.

Jesus is the Most High God, the Great High Priest, and the Eternal King all rolled up into one All Powerful Package who we have access to through the Holy Spirit that He Granted us through His Death, Burial, and Resurrection! Told you this was “Meaty!” and we’re just getting started.

Have a Thought-Provoking Thursday and Stay Safe out there!
