DAILY WORD 7/15/20
10. “But this is the new covenant I will make with the people of Israel on that day, says the LORD: I will put my laws in their minds, and I will write them on their hearts.
I will be their God, and they will be my people.
11. And they will not need to teach their neighbors, nor will they need to teach their relatives, saying, ‘You should know the LORD.’ For everyone, from the least to the greatest, will know me already.
12. And I will forgive their wickedness, and I will never again remember their sins.”
Hebrews 8:10–12 NLT
Today’s passage concludes Chapter 8 of the Book of Hebrews and also wraps up the author’s argument with arguably the most important and impactful of the Changes to the Covenant God made with His people.
The Transformation God made and that the author discusses in this portion of the Chapter is noteworthy because it affects us personally on a fundamental level and it switches both gears and lanes as far as our Relationship with God goes, our Relationship each other, and our Relationship with His Power.
First, God says that He is going to change the way He Interacts with us. This is a gear change in that He will Change the Covenant with His people. He will take what was old and throw it away, replacing it with a New Promise.
It is a Lane change in that He will now foster a Personal Relationship with us, by Placing His Word directly into our hearts and minds. By Enacting this Change Jesus is doing away with the necessity of a priest to “schedule” our time to interact with God. With this New Dynamic, we can come to Him and begin our transformation whenever we want.
Next, He changes the way we interact with each other. This is both a lane and a gear change in that it shifts us into a position of Personal Responsibility, being answerable for our own standing with God.
The gear change comes in as this Relationship can be accessed by us at any time and pace we can handle. There is no longer a gap between priests and regular people because Jesus has taken over the Office.
We can be regular people and have the same kind of Relationship with God as a King or commoner, a pastor or former nonbeliever, a president, or a beggar. This is a Personal Interaction and whatever we put into it with God is what we get out of it regardless of our social status. If we put in the time, He’ll put in the effort with us.
Finally, He changes lanes again with His Stance on Forgiveness. The Levitical priest is no longer needed to act as a go-between mediating to God for the covering of our sins because Jesus as Great High Priest has Covered our transgressions with His own Blood.
This alleviates the need for continual and repeated sacrifice as Jesus Himself became the Sacrifice for our sins for all time and for all people with His Death. But that is not all. He changed gears with the same action.
Now, because of His Sacrifice, if we come “Boldly to the Throne” of God’s Grace and ask Him Directly for His Forgiveness, with no need for a Priest to intervene, not only will He Forgive us but He has Promised with this New Covenant, to never bring up our old actions again.
He will Forget our Repented sins and blot them out as if they never existed at all in His Mind. Of course, the impact of those sins on our minds, environments, and spirits still need to be dealt with but God will no longer hold us accountable in Judgment for them.
That in itself may be the most important aspect of this New Covenant. The wiping away of our sins is the Ultimate Game Changer (or should I say Lane and Gear Changer) in this New Relationship that Jesus offers us within this New Covenant.
He gives us an opportunity to start new from wherever we begin with Him, regardless of whether we have been terrible people or not so bad and we can all end up in the same Place with Him; Worshiping Him before His Throne for all Eternity! This is the True Impact of His Role as The Great High Priest!
