DAILY WORD 7/10/20
26. He is the kind of high priest we need because he is holy and blameless, unstained by sin. He has been set apart from sinners and has been given the highest place of honor in heaven.
27. Unlike those other high priests, he does not need to offer sacrifices every day. They did this for their own sins first and then for the sins of the people. But Jesus did this once for all when he offered himself as the sacrifice for the people’s sins.
28. The law appointed high priests who were limited by human weakness. But after the law was given, God appointed his Son with an oath, and his Son has been made the perfect High Priest forever.
Hebrews 7:26–28 NLT
Today’s passage concludes Chapter 7 of the Book of Hebrews and the author’s thought on the matter of Jesus, The Great High Priest holding a Superior Position over that of the Levitical priests.
There is no question that Jesus’s Status as God in Flesh is Greater than that of fallible men but the author states his position so that his readers of the time can understand and it all still holds true today for those of us transitioning from the “Milk of beginners Doctrine” to the “Strong Meat” of Books like Hebrews designed to offer greater Spiritual Nourishment to those in need of more to chew on.
He begins by presenting the Blameless, Holy, and Undefiled Nature of Jesus, Who, even as a human being, still never sinned, making Him the Perfect Sacrifice. But that is not all.
Because of that Holy Position, Jesus never had to make Sacrifices on a daily basis cover up His own sin. The Levitical priests not only made sacrifices for the sins of the people, they first had to make offerings to atone for their own transgressions. Jesus’s Position in this is clearly Superior to theirs.
The Mosaic Law was preempted by Jesus’s Selfless Actions because the Law was flawed. The biggest flaw was the dependence on fallible humans for leadership and intercession.
However, when Jesus Appointed Himself as Great High Priest, He, with the Oath He Swore, Became the Priest we always needed and His Priesthood will never pass away but will Endure Forever!
In one Forward-Thinking, Impractical, Awe-Inspiring Move, Jesus Wiped away the Mosaic Law, Toppled the Levitical priesthood, and Established a New Law, Priesthood, and Dynamic that so Outshined the former system that it would forever be obsolete.
Why would Jesus be called the Great High Priest? Is there any wonder after studying Hebrews Chapter 7 for a week? He made the Hard Choices to Condescend from His Throne, be Born into His own Creation, and Die so that we could have a Better and More Fulfilling Relationship with God! Sounds like a Great High Priest to me!
