10. Their helpless victims are crushed; they fall beneath the strength of the wicked.
Psalm 10:10 NLT
Today’s Single Shot returns us to David’s lament to the Lord over his treatment by his enemies. David was in distress over his abuse and called out to God for His assistance. However, in the recording of David’s desperate prayer, he provided us with a comprehensive list of Attributes with which we can Identify and Combat the Character Traits of the Wicked.
David began by inquiring of God why He seemed to be so far from him when he needed Him the most. That is often how we feel when confronted by opposition. We think God is no longer there because we don’t see His Hand at work in our situation. But nothing could be further from the Truth! God is always there, but sometimes He uses our trials to make us stronger!
Next, David launched into his complaints about the actions of his haters. Full of Pride, they persecute the poor and take the side of covetous people who hate God. The Wicked do not seek God for Guidance in anything, believing themselves to be enough for success. After all, they’ve known achievement cheating up to this point. They think, why would that ever change?
David said that the Wicked are always dreaming up schemes to ensnare the unwary and are violent at the drop of a dime. They curse, lie, cheat, and mislead whenever they get the chance. They believe themselves invulnerable to consequences, so they do whatever they can get away with.
But that is not the worst of it because Verses eight through ten give us the true danger of this kind of reprobate action. That is where Today’s Passage comes in. It says that the Wicked lurk in the shadows, waiting for innocents to rob and kill. In the KJV, it reads, “He croucheth, and humbleth himself, that the poor may fall by his strong ones.”
So, according to David’s account, these individuals who thrive in their Pride have finally discovered humility. However, their self-effacement is only a means to an end. The Wicked are so Prideful and Violent that the only way they would ever even consider humility or lowering themselves is so that they can more effectively identify and attack their hapless victims.
No wonder David was so up in arms over his dealings with these people! They are quite literally the worst of the worst, only seemingly drawing breath to cause chaos and prey on those who are weaker or less fortunate than they are. In polite society, these individuals are those packing our jails and filling the news stories with tragedy every night. They have no concern for life, liberty, or anything else but the pursuit of their own happiness, regardless of how it may affect others.
In the next Single Shot, we’ll cover why these people believe themselves to be free of Judgment. In the meantime, consider how much work the Wicked put in to be in the perfect position to take what’s yours. What countermeasures are required to combat this kind of threat?
Again, David shows us the Perfect Strategy for fighting off the Wicked attacks. The warrior who killed countless enemies of Israel called on God for help in his time of trouble. So, if the man who was said to be a man after God’s own Heart called on Him, might not that be an excellent place to start for us as well?
God will always have our backs if we will only Trust in Him. Therefore, no matter what or who comes against us, as long as God’s got our back, we have nothing to fear because He’s never lost a battle, and He ain’t starting now! Lean into His Grace even as the Wicked lean into their plots. When you exercise Faith in God, He will always Protect you! Bank on it!
Have a Terrific Tuesday and Remember, To Stay Alert Means Knowing Your Enemy!
