Character Traits of the Wicked (Pt. 2)

4. The wicked are too proud to seek God. They seem to think that God is dead.

Psalm 10:4 NLT

Today’s Single Shot resumes the thought David is pouring out before the Lord in his distress. David is surrounded on all sides by his enemies and believes that he is about to be overwhelmed. Some people desired nothing more than to see him destroyed.

In our lives as Christians, we may not face the same kind of physical dangers that David did, but you can be sure that there are plenty of Principalities and Powers, or in other words, agents of the enemy, to take their place.

Therefore, it would behoove us to know the elements in our adversary’s playbook. This particular Passage is of such importance to us as Christians because it gives us invaluable insight into how the enemy operates and the tactics of his emissaries.

In review, the first traits of the wicked, as stated in Verses two and three, were Pride, persecuting the poor, setting up snares for the righteous, boasting of the evil things they’ve done or want to do, supporting greed and the greedy, and hating God.

Today, we will look at two more things that can be highlighted from the wicked’s characters and actions. Here’s how the Passage reads in the Amplified Bible, “The wicked, in the haughtiness of his face, will not seek nor inquire for Him;”

So, once again, it is Pride or arrogance that is the driver of the actions of the wicked. That is a recurring theme for those who hate God and actively do their best to detract from His Power. And it is the exact sin that cemented Lucifer’s demise in the first place. Lust and Pride are the catalysts for almost all of the World’s ills and downfalls.

But why is Pride so dangerous in the first place? How could someone having a high opinion of themselves possibly cause any kind of issue in one’s life? We’ve already highlighted the list that David is lamenting from firsthand experience, but he also offers us another lament.

Today’s focus comes from the second half of the Verse, where it says, “All his thoughts are, “There is no God [so there is no accountability or punishment].” That is why Pride has the potential to become an impediment to even a reasonable person’s actions.

Pride worms its way into our psyche in an insidious manner. It whispers to us that God is not necessary if we conduct our business in a manner that nets our success. So, why bother with Him at all then? That “I can do it all by myself” attitude is the most challenging portion of Pride’s effects.

Why? It’ is because that aspect of Pride’s influence leads those adopting that approach to believe that God doesn’t exist. And if God doesn’t exist, the there are no eternal consequences for our transgressions. And quite possibly, there will be no consequences for any of our misdeeds at all!

But we know from reading God’s Word that everyone, regardless of their belief, principles (or lack thereof), or status in life, will be Judged in the end. No one will escape God’s Verdict. So, even if one adopts this wicked, prideful frame of mind and never receives justice in life, it will still find them even beyond the grave.

Every one of those wicked snare setters has one coming when God returns to take stock of the World. Do you think He will let the people who targeted the weak off with just a slap on the wrist? NOPE! Believe in God or not, you’re still under His Authority, and His Rules still apply.

Pride can give you the false belief that God doesn’t exist or doesn’t care about what we do to each other. Nothing could be farther from the Truth. Pride is a liar! It is an emotion that can drive greed, war, violence, and murder. Be careful when you see it poking its head up. Embracing it will never end well. Just ask Lucifer.
